Swim Camp Madeira: An Unforgettable Experience Beyond the Sea

SwimTogether was born to give you unforgettable experiences in the world of open water swimming, and there’s no better way to launch our blog than by diving into the crystal-clear waters of Swim Camp Madeira. This iconic swim camp began in 2019 and has become a landmark for swimmers seeking adventure, a connection with nature, and immersion in the culture of Madeira.

Why Madeira? Let us show you why…

More than a place, more than a land lost in the middle of the ocean… Madeira Island is a natural sanctuary, a piece of paradise that invites us to leave behind the worries of everyday life and, in return, offers peace of mind. Between mountains so high they seem to touch the sky and serene waters that reflect the golden rays of the sun, it’s impossible not to return year after year.

The Garajau Natural Reserve, Ponta de São Lourenço, and Fajã dos Padres are just a few of the breathtaking spots where our swimmers have the privilege of swimming, surrounded by vibrant marine life, where we can find Dolphins, Whales, Sperm Whales, and, if we're lucky, being treated to a visit from harmless Basking Sharks!

The crystal-clear water, with temperatures ranging from 20ºC (68ºF) to 24ºC (75.2ºF), invites swimmers to experience the freedom of swimming without a wetsuit, allowing a complete connection with nature.

Its visibility, up to 40 meters, enables exploration of this underwater world, uncovering its secrets through the observation of the local marine flora and fauna, such as Turtles, Rays, and Groupers, as majestic as they are gentle creatures.

The tropical climate of Madeira Island makes hiking an excellent complement to swimming, immersing us in the island's lush green heart and discovering wonderful and challenging trails.

Of course, the cherry on top is the excursion to the Desertas Islands. Yes! This sanctuary, untouched by Man, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, makes this experience truly unique. Here, nature is in its purest and wildest form, providing a haven for marine life and rare birds, such as the imposing Freira-do-Bugio. Its steep cliffs and arid landscapes create a mesmerizing contrast with the deep blue ocean.

Swimming here feels as though time stops… only silence remains.

The Desertas Islands are also the temporary home to vigilantes, who change every 15 days, and occasionally, biologists dedicated to studying rare and endemic species. Among them stands out the Monk Seal, one of the world’s most endangered seal species, which has chosen these protected waters as a refuge for breeding. Sometimes, its unexpected appearance turns an adventurous day into an unforgettable moment.

During the visit, we disembark on the island to enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by our private chef. In the afternoon, we explore the island, diving into its history and biodiversity with a visit to the small museum that tells the story of the nature reserve and the unique species that inhabit it.

But nature isn’t all that this wonderful island has to offer! Madeira also captivates with its gastronomic charm, offering authentic flavors such as bolo do caco, limpets, and scabbard fish. In the streets, we can find markets full of delicious fruit, typical flowers, and smiles from Madeirans, inviting us to taste their crops, picked directly from their fields.

There are several reasons to return to Madeira Island! Whether it's the Flower Festival in May or, for those who love a challenge, the MIUS – Madeira Island Ultra Swim in September, which we’re pleased to include in our trip. Bringing together swimmers from all over the world, this event offers an unforgettable open water experience.

Swim Camp Madeira is more than a destination; it’s a thousand reasons to fall in love…
