About the Event
The Swim GP Portugal has been gaining international recognition and, due to its relevance and visibility, was nominated for the 2024 World Event of the Year by the World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA), achieving an impressive 7th place among 34 prestigious competitions worldwide. Additionally, it received official recognition as an event of public interest by the Government of Portugal, consolidating its impact in promoting open water swimming in the country.
The event opens with the traditional tribute to athletes, an emotional moment that celebrates the international spirit of the competition. In a moving ceremony, all swimmers are presented according to their countries, symbolizing the union of different cultures around a shared passion – the sea.
For those looking for a high-level challenge, the Swim GP Portugal is part of the exclusive Ultramarathon Swim Series, which includes only three other races in emblematic locations such as Canada, Italy, and the USA, making it the only swimming ultramarathon in Portugal. This iconic 20 km course begins at the historic Doca de Belém in Lisbon, a site of great significance framed by the imposing Monumento dos Descobrimento. This landmark, which honors Portuguese navigators and great maritime expeditions, serves as inspiration for athletes as they embark on the most demanding challenge of the competition, a crossing that unites the glorious past with the adventurous spirit of the present.

If 20 km seems too demanding, there is the Olympic distance of 10 km, which follows the beautiful coast of Oeiras and Cascais, passing by Praia da Torre, located between the Forte de São Julião da Barra and the Oeiras Marina.
In addition to the long-distance races, the event offers 1 km and 1.9 km courses for beginners, as well as intermediate distances of 3.8 km and 5 km, ensuring that all swimmers have the opportunity to experience the thrill of competing in open water.
Cascais, besides being the ideal setting for the event, is a destination rich in history and maritime tradition. Iconic beaches such as Praia da Duquesa, Praia do Tamariz, and Boca do Inferno are just a few of the attractions. The historic center, with its charming streets and Largo de Camões, invites visitors to take leisurely strolls after the adrenaline of the competition.
Gastronomy is another highlight of Cascais, especially for those who appreciate fresh fish and seafood. From the traditional caldeirada to dishes such as grilled sea bass or Bulhão Pato-style clams, the local flavors are a true celebration of the proximity to the ocean.
